Is that dusty Pez dispenser beyond saving?

Imagine finding a long-forgotten Pez dispenser tucked away in an old box – perhaps a beloved childhood character now coated in years of dust, or a vintage find with a sticky film and faint scuffs. Your heart sinks a little. Is this collectible doomed to remain a shadow of its former glory? Not necessarily. This guide covers how to approach cleaning and minor restoration for your Pez dispensers, helping you safely bring them back to a display-worthy state and preserve their charm for years to come.

What household items are safe for Pez cleaning?

When it comes to cleaning any collectible, especially one made of plastic like Pez dispensers, a 'gentle first' approach is always the best policy. You don't want to inadvertently cause more damage or devalue your piece. Start with the least abrasive methods and tools you have around the house. For general cleaning, you really only need a few simple items:

  • Distilled Water: Tap water, especially in hard water areas, can leave mineral deposits. Distilled water is purer and won't introduce new problems.
  • Mild Dish Soap: Think something like Dawn. Avoid soaps with heavy perfumes, dyes, or moisturizers, as these can leave residues or react poorly with plastics over time. A single drop is usually plenty.
  • Soft-Bristled Brushes: An old, soft toothbrush is perfect for getting into crevices. For delicate areas or intricate details, a soft artist's paintbrush or even a makeup brush works wonders for dry dusting.
  • Cotton Swabs and Cotton Rounds: These are indispensable for precise cleaning, especially around painted details or areas that shouldn't get too wet.
  • Microfiber Cloths: Gentle and effective for drying and polishing without scratching.

The process is straightforward: first, remove any candy from the dispenser. Then, using a dry, soft brush, gently brush away loose dust and debris. Compressed air (the kind used for electronics) can also help dislodge dust from tricky spots. Once the dry dust is gone, mix a tiny amount of mild dish soap with lukewarm distilled water. Dampen a microfiber cloth or cotton swab with this solution (don't drench it!) and carefully wipe down the dispenser. For stubborn grime in crevices, a soft toothbrush can be used with light pressure. Always clean around any decals or paper stickers, not directly on them, as water can cause them to lift or bleed. After cleaning, wipe the dispenser with a clean cloth dampened with plain distilled water to remove any soap residue, then pat dry immediately with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
